OET Reading Part B

OET Reading Part B is designed to test your ability to understand short workplace texts that healthcare professionals encounter daily. Unlike Part A, which focuses on speed and detail retrieval, Part B emphasizes comprehension of main ideas, purpose, and tone in professional communication.

Key Features of Part B

Six short extracts (each about 100–140 words).

Texts may include:

  • Hospital policies.
  • Memos and emails.
  • Notices and announcements.
  • Guidelines and procedural instructions

Task:

  • Each extract has one multiple-choice question with three options.
  • You must identify the main point, purpose, or specific detail.

Skills Tested:

  • Recognizing the writer’s intention (e.g., informing, instructing, warning).
  • Distinguishing between main ideas and supporting details.
  • Understanding workplace communication styles and vocabulary.

Healthcare professionals constantly read short texts—emails, notices, or guidelines—that affect patient safety and workflow. Part B ensures you can interpret these communications accurately and respond appropriately in real-life scenarios.
