OET Reading Part A

OET (Occupational English Test) Reading Part A is designed to test fast and accurate information retrieval skills in a healthcare context. It simulates real-life situations where healthcare professionals must quickly locate and interpret information to make safe, effective decisions for patient care.

Key Features of Part A

You are given four short texts (extracts from healthcare reference materials).

These may include:

  • Medication tables and dosage charts.
  • Treatment pathways and options.
  • Instructions and guidelines.
  • Symptom descriptions and diagnostic tools.
  • Visuals such as tables, flowcharts, or diagrams

Task:

  • Answer 20 questions in 15 minutes.
  • Questions are typically short-answer, sentence completion, or matching.
  • The focus is on skimming and scanning rather than deep reading.

Skills Tested:

  • Rapid identification of relevant details.
  • Comparing information across multiple texts.
  • Understanding healthcare-specific terminology.
  • Managing time under pressure

Part A reflects the real-world demands of healthcare practice. Doctors, nurses, and other professionals often need to quickly check dosage instructions, treatment guidelines, or patient information. The test ensures candidates can handle this efficiently in English.
