Verbs are names of actions humans and other animals do with body parts including mind, those that happen naturally, and the acts of the supernatural including Gods.

Humans

Run, Write, Think, Speak, Build, Laugh, Cook, Read, Jump, Dance

Animals

Bark, Fly, Swim, Hunt, Crawl, Roar, Graze, Climb, Slither, Pounce

Natural Actions

  • Fall (Rain falls)
  • Melt (Ice melts)
  • Flow (River, water flows).
  • Blow (Wind blows)
  • Strike (Thunder strikes)
  • Erupt (Volcano erupts)
  • Quake (Earth quakes)
  • Form (Clouds form)
  • Rise (Sun rises)
  • Decay (Leaves / bodies decay).

Supernatural (actions attributed to gods or magical beings):

  1. Bless, Curse, Transform, Vanish, Enchant, Create, Destroy.

Apart from these, we can classify verbs as Doing, Being and Having. Doing Verbs are those you do with your body or mind.

Doing Verbs

You need to use parts of the body to do “doing verbs.” 

  • Body: Run, Jump, Write, Read, Speak, Cook, Build, Dance, Swim, Climb, Throw, Catch, Dig, Drive, Kick, Sing, Draw, Lift, Push, Pull
  • Mind: Feel, Know, Understand, Believe, Love, Hate, Prefer, Remember, Forget, 
  • Body and Mind: Taste, Hear, Feel. 

Being Verbs

Being verbs do not do actions. When you say “She is my mother,” the verb is “is.” You mother does not have to give birth everyday to “be” your mother. Right?

  1. Be, Is, am, are, Was, were
  2. Seem, Appear, Become, Exist, Remain, Stay, Belong

Having Verbs

These involve ownership or possession:

  1. Have, has, had
  2. Own, Possess, Contain, Include, Lack, Keep, Lose, Inherit, Possess.

Fill in the blanks with the correct verb forms in the brackets. Remember, if the subject is singular, add "s" at the end of the verbs in present tense. 

The river (flow / flows) through the land. Rain (fall / falls) from the sky and (make / makes) the ground wet. Wind (blow / blows) and (move / moves) the trees. Clouds (form / forms) in the sky and (move / moves) slowly. Leaves (fall / falls) from trees and lie on the ground. After some time, they (break / breaks) into small pieces and mix with the soil.

Yesterday, we (go / went) to Kochi. We (travel / travelled) by bus and (reach / reached) there in the morning. The sun (shine / shone) brightly and the sea water (look / looked) very blue. We (walk / walked) near the beach and (play / played) in the sand. Birds (fly / flew) above the sea and (make / made) soft sounds. In the evening, we (return / returned) home happily.
