Bharat our Land – Poem

The Poem

The mighty Himavant is ours
There’s no equal anywhere on earth.
The generous Ganga is ours which
other river can match her grace?

The sacred Upanishads are ours
What scriptures else to name with them?
This sunny golden land is ours
She’s peerless, let’s praise her!

Gallant warriors have lived here,
Many a sage has sanctified this land.
The divinest music has been heard here,
And here all auspicious things are found.

Here Brahma-knowledge has taken root,
And the Buddha preached his dhamma here.
Of hoary antiquity is Bharat,
She’s peerless, let’s praise her! …

Paraphrase

This land is blessed with the mighty Himalayas — no other mountain range in the world can compare. It is also home to the sacred Ganga, whose beauty and generosity no other river can match.

The profound teachings of the Upanishads belong to this land; what other scriptures can equal their wisdom? This radiant, golden country is truly unique — there is none like it, and it deserves our praise.

Brave warriors have walked this soil, and countless sages have made it holy. Divine music has filled the air here, and everything auspicious seems to flourish in this place.

It is here that the highest spiritual knowledge has grown, and where the Buddha shared his teachings. Bharat is ancient and timeless, unmatched by any other — let us celebrate and honor her greatness.

The Poet – Subramania Bharati

Subramania Bharati was a great Indian poet, writer, journalist, and freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu. He is often called “Mahakavi Bharati,” which means a great poet. He lived during the time of the Indian freedom struggle and used his powerful writings to inspire people to fight against British rule.

Bharati wrote poems and songs about patriotism, courage, equality, and social reform. He strongly believed in women’s rights and spoke against caste discrimination, which was very progressive for his time. His works were written mainly in Tamil and are known for their simplicity, energy, and emotional strength.
