Indefinite articles are words like “a” and “an” in English. We use them when we talk about a person, place, animal, or thing in a general way, not a specific one. German indefinite articles change according to gender.
German has:
- Masculine nouns
- Feminine nouns
- Neuter nouns
Unlike definite articles, there is no plural form of the indefinite article in German.
The three main indefinite articles are: ein, eine and ein.
Ein: Masculine
Used with masculine nouns.
Examples:
- ein Vater — a father
- ein Hund — a dog
- ein Tisch — a table

Important Note
There is NO plural indefinite article in German. In English we say a book (ein Buch) for a single books and books (Bücher) for more than one book.
