  1. Multiple Choice:
    • Choose one correct answer from four options, or choose multiple correct answers from a longer list.
  2. Matching Information:
    • Match information to specific paragraphs in the passage.
  3. Matching Headings:
    • Match headings to the correct paragraphs or sections of the text.
  4. Matching Features:
    • Match a list of items (e.g., names, dates, events) to the passage information.
  5. Matching Sentence Endings:
    • Complete the sentence by matching it to the correct ending.
  6. Sentence Completion:
    • Complete sentences using words from the passage.
  7. Summary, Note, Table, Flow-chart Completion:
    • Complete summaries or notes with words from the passage or using a word bank provided.
  8. Diagram Label Completion:
    • Label diagrams with words from the passage.
  9. Short-answer Questions:
    • Answer questions with words from the passage, usually no more than three words.

Key Strategies

  1. Skimming and Scanning:
    • Skim the passage to get the general idea.
    • Scan for specific information needed to answer the questions.
  2. Time Management:
    • Spend roughly 20 minutes on each passage.
    • Don’t spend too long on any one question; move on and come back if time permits.
  3. Understand the Question Types:
    • Familiarize yourself with each question type and the best strategies for answering them.
  4. Pay Attention to Keywords:
    • Look for keywords in the questions and match them with words in the passage.
  5. Practice Regularly:
    • Regular practice with past papers or sample tests to improve speed and accuracy.

Tips for Success

  • Read the Instructions Carefully: Ensure you understand what is required for each question type.
  • Underline Key Words: This helps to quickly find the relevant parts of the text.
  • Guess if Necessary: There is no penalty for wrong answers, so make an educated guess if you’re unsure.
  • Transfer Answers Carefully: Ensure your answers are legible and correctly transferred to the answer sheet.
  • Improve Vocabulary: A broader vocabulary will help in understanding the passages better.
