A Letter to God

Introduction to Lencho

  • Lencho was a poor farmer who lived in a small house on the crest of a low hill.
  • His house stood alone, overlooking the valley and the river below.
  • The only thing the earth needed was a downpour or at least a shower.
  • Lencho depended entirely on the corn field for his living.
  • His family helped him work in the fields every day.
  • They were simple people with a deep connection to the land.
  • The land was their only source of food and income.
  • Lencho had full faith in the coming harvest.
  • He eagerly waited for rain to nourish his crops.
  • His entire future depended on the success of the harvest.

Hope for Rain

  • During the morning, Lencho hoped for a shower to water his fields.
  • By afternoon, the sky became covered with huge mountains of clouds.
  • The air turned fresh and cool as rain approached.
  • Lencho went out to feel the first drops of rain on his body.
  • He expressed joy by comparing the raindrops to new coins.
  • He said the big drops were ten-cent pieces and the small ones were five.
  • The rain began gently, bringing happiness to the family.
  • Everyone felt that the crops would now grow well.
  • The family looked forward to a good harvest.
  • Their hopes rose with the falling rain.

Rain Turned into Hailstorm

  • Suddenly, a strong wind began to blow from the north.
  • The sky became dark and filled with clouds.
  • The rain changed into a violent storm.
  • Hailstones began to fall instead of raindrops.
  • The hailstones were like new silver coins at first.
  • Soon they became larger and more destructive.
  • The boys ran out to collect the frozen pearls.
  • The storm continued for an hour.
  • The field became completely covered with hail.
  • The crops were severely damaged by the storm.

Complete Destruction

  • The corn field was totally destroyed by the hailstorm.
  • Not a leaf remained on the trees.
  • The flowers were gone from the plants.
  • The field looked as if it had been covered with salt.
  • The destruction was complete and absolute.
  • Lencho’s hopes were completely shattered.
  • The family faced the danger of hunger.
  • There would be no corn that year.
  • They would have no food or income.
  • The entire village was affected by the storm.

Lencho’s Unshaken Faith

  • That night, Lencho sat silently, full of sorrow.
  • Everyone felt that they would go hungry that year.
  • However, Lencho had one hope left—help from God.
  • He believed that God would not let his family starve.
  • His faith in God was absolute and unquestioning.
  • He trusted that God saw everything, even what was deep in one’s conscience.
  • He decided to write a letter to God.
  • He believed that God would surely respond.
  • His faith replaced his fear and despair.
  • He remained hopeful despite the disaster.

Writing to God

  • Lencho wrote a letter addressed simply to God.
  • He explained that the hailstorm had destroyed his entire crop.
  • He requested one hundred pesos for survival.
  • He needed the money to sow his field again.
  • He also needed food for his family until the next harvest.
  • He wrote the letter with complete sincerity.
  • He went to the town and posted it.
  • He placed a stamp on the envelope carefully.
  • He dropped it into the mailbox with great faith.
  • He was certain that God would help him.

Reaction at the Post Office

  • The postman laughed heartily when he saw the address.
  • He showed the letter to the postmaster.
  • The postmaster also laughed at first.
  • However, he was deeply moved by Lencho’s faith.
  • He decided not to break Lencho’s confidence.
  • He resolved to answer the letter.
  • He collected money from his collagues.
  • He himself contributed a part of his salary.
  • They gathered as much money as possible.
  • Finally, they could collect only seventy pesos.

Reply from “God”

  • The postmaster placed the money in an envelope.
  • He signed the letter as God.
  • The letter was delivered to Lencho the next Sunday.
  • Lencho went to the town eagerly to check for a reply.
  • He opened the envelope with excitement.
  • He showed no surprise at finding money inside.
  • His faith in God was so strong that he expected it.
  • He began to count the money carefully.
  • He realized that it was not the full amount.
  • His expression changed as he counted only seventy pesos.

Lencho’s Doubt

  • Lencho became angry when he saw the shortage.
  • He believed that God could not make a mistake.
  • He concluded that someone had taken the rest.
  • He suspected the post office employees.
  • He called them a bunch of crooks.
  • He felt betrayed by them.
  • However, he never doubted God’s generosity.
  • His faith in God remained unshaken.
  • He decided to write another letter.
  • He demanded the remaining money.

The Second Letter

  • Lencho wrote a second letter to God immediately.
  • He asked for the remaining thirty pesos.
  • He insisted that he needed the money urgently.
  • He warned God not to send it through the mail.
  • He said that the post office employees were dishonest.
  • He expressed complete trust in God alone.
  • His innocence and simplicity were clearly shown.
  • The situation created a deep sense of irony.
  • The story highlighted the contrast between faith and reality.
  • It ultimately showed both human kindness and blind faith.
