For the Paper 2 (comparative essay) component of both Language & Literature and Literature variants:
- The mark-allocation for Criterion A (Knowledge, Understanding & Interpretation) has been reduced to 5 marks (from the previous 10-mark allocation).
- Criterion B (formerly just Analysis & Evaluation) is now split into two parts.
- B1: Analysis & Evaluation of textual/authorial choices — 5 marks.
- B2: Comparative analysis between works — 5 marks.
- Criteria C (Coherence, Focus & Organisation) and D (Language) each remain at 5 marks.
Therefore the total for Paper 2 will be (5 + 5 + 5 + 5) = 20 marks under the new model. (Some sources say 25 marks if all four criteria are 5 marks each)
- For the Literature course, beginning first teaching September 2024 (with first assessment May 2026).
- The number of required literary works to study has been reduced (for greater depth) — e.g., at SL minimum seven works (rather than previous nine), at HL minimum ten works (rather than previous thirteen) with conditions on translation, literary form, periods, countries/regions.
- There are procedural / delivery changes across the IB:
- Exams may shift to include digital modes, and the IB is working to ensure assessment integrity (e.g., supervision rules, variance in exam papers) for May 2025 and beyond.
