The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized test designed to assess English language proficiency for non-native speakers. It is widely used for study, work, and migration purposes.
Types of IELTS
- IELTS Academic – For students applying to universities or professional institutions.
- IELTS General Training – For work experience, training programs, or immigration.
- UKVI IELTS – Same as the others but you need to score a very low band score.
Test Format
The IELTS test consists of four sections:
Listening (30 minutes)
- 4 sections with 40 questions
- Includes conversations and monologues
Reading (60 minutes)
- Academic: 3 long texts from books, journals, or newspapers
- General Training: 3 sections with short and long texts on daily life and workplace topics
Writing (60 minutes)
Task 1 – Different Tasks for Academic and General
- Academic: Describe a graph, chart, or diagram.
- General Training: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal)
Task 2 – Same tasks for Academic and General. There are different types of essays:
- Opinion (Agree/Disagree) Essay – Express your opinion on a statement.
- Discussion (Both Sides) Essay – Discuss both perspectives and give your opinion.
- Problem-Solution Essay – Identify a problem and suggest solutions.
- Advantages and Disadvantages Essay – Analyze both benefits and drawbacks.
- Double Question (Two-Part) Essay – Answer two related questions.
- Narrative Essay – Tells a personal story.
- Descriptive Essay – Describes a person, place, or object in detail.
- Expository Essay – Explains a topic using facts and logic.
- Persuasive Essay – Convince the reader to accept your viewpoint.
Speaking (11–14 minutes)
- Part 1: Introduction & general questions
- Part 2: Cue card (short speech)
- Part 3: Discussion based on Part 2
Scoring
- Band scores range from 0 to 9, with 0 being non-user and 9 being expert.
- Most universities require 6.0–7.5 for admission.
Test Availability & Validity
- Conducted multiple times a month worldwide.
- Scores are valid for 2 years.
