Basic Rules for Making Plurals
- Add “-s” to most words → Dog → Dogs, Car → Cars
- Add “-es” to words ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o → Box → Boxes, Brush → Brushes
- Change “y” to “i” and add “-es” (if a consonant is before “y”) → Penny → Pennies, Baby → Babies
- If “y” comes after a vowel, just add “-s” → Toy → Toys, Key → Keys
- For words ending in “f” or “fe,” change “f” to “v” and add “-es” → Leaf → Leaves, Knife → Knives
- Some words change completely → Man → Men, Child → Children
- Some words don’t change at all → Sheep → Sheep, Deer → Deer
- Some compound words change the main word → Mother-in-law → Mothers-in-law, Passerby → Passersby
- Some words have two plural forms → Fish → Fish (or Fishes for different species), Octopus → Octopuses/Octopi
