How to change to Past Tense:
- Add -ed to regular verbs play → played | talk → talked
- Double the final consonant before adding -ed (if the verb ends in consonant-vowel-consonant and is one syllable) hop → hopped | rub → rubbed
- Change final -y to -i and add -ed (for verbs ending in consonant + y) cry → cried | study → studied
- Do NOT change -y if it comes after a vowel play → played | enjoy → enjoyed
- Irregular verbs change in special ways go → went | see → saw | eat → ate
- Add -d if the verb already ends in -e love → loved | like → liked
- For ‘be’ verbs, change depending on subject am/is → was | are → were
- Use ‘did’ for negatives and questions in past tense He did not go. | Did she read the book?
- Keep the verb’s base form after ‘did’ in questions or negatives Did they dance? (not “danced”) | She didn’t run. (not “ran”)
- Some verbs don’t change at all (same in present and past) cut → cut | put → put.
