What is GCAN for Nurses?

Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing (Australian Nursing Practice) is is a bridging and upskilling course for nurses planning to work abroad.

  • GCAN Is a postgraduate-level (AQF Level 8) nursing program.
  • It is designed mainly for internationally qualified nurses (IQNMs).
  • It helps prepare for NCLEX (theory exam) and OSCE / OBA (practical assessment in Australia).
  • It does NOT directly give registration, but supports the pathway.
  • Its standard duration is 26 weeks.
  • It includes theory modules, OSCE preparation and 4-week clinical placement (in some formats).

Eligibility

  • Registered Nurse (GNM / BSc Nursing).
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • English proficiency (e.g., EAP / IELTS equivalent).
  • Work experience (preferred, not always mandatory)

Course Structure

  • ~12 specialty modules.
  • Focus areas are Evidence-based practice, Patient safety, Clinical decision-making, Communication & ethics, International nursing standards
  • Common assessment types are Written assignments, Case studies, Reflective writing, ePosters / presentations, OSCE preparation tasks and Portfolio submissions.
  • Assessments can include written tasks, posters, presentations, OSCEs.

Word Count

There is no single fixed word count, but common patterns:

  • Short assignments: 500–1,000 words.
  • Major assignments: 1,500–2,500 words.
  •  ePoster: Often 300–800 words (condensed academic content).

NB: Word count rules vary → strict formatting matters

After GCAN, you can:

  • Prepare for AHPRA registration pathway.
  • Attempt NCLEX and OSCE (OBA).
  • Improve chances for Australia, UK / Ireland / other global systems.
  • Also gives credit towards Master’s in Nursing.
