Task 1

The expression ‘hide and seek’ is used in the text. This is called a binomial. Binomials are expressions consisting of two words, usually linked by a conjunction like ‘and’ or ‘or’, that are commonly used together in a fixed order. For example: odds and ends, right or wrong.

Sentences using any five binomials

  1. You have to sink or swim when you face challenges alone.
  2. He studies seriously on and off throughout the year.
  3. You can mix and match colours to design your project creatively.
  4. She follows an all or nothing attitude towards her goals.
  5. Hard work is part and parcel of achieving success in life.

Task 2

Read the following words from the text given in the box below.

These words are made by adding suitable prefixes (‘un’, ‘ir’, and ‘in’) to give an opposite or negative meaning to the words.

Task 3

Identify any five words with prefixes from the story and make sentences using each.

  1. Unhappy (prefix: un-)
    The grandmother felt unhappy when she could not read the story.
  2. Unable (prefix: un-)
    She was unable to read the book without help.
  3. Rewrite (prefix: re-)
    The teacher asked the student to rewrite the sentence neatly.
  4. Disappear (prefix: dis-)
    Her fear began to disappear as she started learning.
  5. Encourage (prefix: en-)
    The granddaughter tried to encourage her grandmother to study.

Task 4

In the sentence, “I knew, then, that my student had passed with flying colours”, the phrase “passed with flying colours” is an idiom. It means outstanding performance. Now, match the idioms related to ‘learning’ given in Column 1 with their meanings in Column 2. You may refer to a dictionary.

Task 5

We use past perfect tense to indicate two completed actions — one occurring earlier (later past) and the other more recently (recent past). The more recent action is expressed in the simple past, while the earlier action takes the past perfect tense.
