Subject and Predicate

What is subject? What is Predicate? Why should we learn Subject and Predicate?

Subject Predicate
Peter likes to play with toys.
Reena is a smart girl.
Sara is cycling in the park.
The nurse brought the patient in.
The doctor prescribed a medicine for Peter.
The wind blew into the room.
My uncle tells stories at bedtime.
Cats can see in the dark.
Parents teach their children.

Did you read the table? What do you understand about Subjects?

  • Subjects are people (like Peter, Reena, Sara, etc.).
  • Subjects are animals or things, too
  • Subjects are shorter than Predicates.
  • Subjects can be one word or more than one word.

Read the table again. What do you understand about Predicates?

  • Predicates come after Subjects.
  • Predicates start with an action (like, is, brought, prescribed, blew, can, etc.)
  • Predicates end with a Subject (wow!).
  • Predicates give more information about the Subjects.
