IELTS Writing Academic

The IELTS Academic Writing test evaluates your ability to communicate ideas effectively and cohesively (clearly) in English, particularly in an academic context. The test consists of two tasks:

  • Task 1: Interpret and describe visual information (e.g., a graph, chart, or diagram) in at least 150 words. This task assesses your ability to summarize and compare data.
  • Task 2: Write an essay (minimum 250 words) responding to an argument, problem, or opinion. This task measures your ability to articulate and justify your views logically and cohesively.

Task 1 Sample

The graph shows the percentage of internet users in the USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, and the UK between 2000 and 2020. Overall, internet usage rose significantly in all five countries, with Canada experiencing the fastest growth. By 2020, nearly 100% of the population in each country had internet access.

In 2000, the USA led with 40% internet penetration, followed by Canada at 35%. The other three countries had less than 25% access. Over the next decade, Canada witnessed rapid growth, surpassing the USA to reach 85% by 2010. Between 2010 and 2020, the UK and Japan showed notable increases, while Germany exhibited steady growth. By 2020, internet access in all five countries reached nearly 100%, leveling the gap between them.

Overall, while the pace of growth varied, all countries demonstrated significant improvement in internet accessibility over the two decades.

Purpose

You are advised to spend about 20 minutes on Task 1, leaving enough time for Task 2, which carries more weight in scoring.

  • Task Achievement: How well you address the question and highlight key features.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: Logical structure and use of linking words.
  • Lexical Resource: Use of varied and accurate vocabulary.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Correct grammar and sentence structures.

Task 1 does not require opinions or personal views. Focus solely on describing the data objectively.
