Asking Questions Part I (BeHMD)

You can ask questions with the following group of words.

  • Be Group: Is, , was, were, will and shall.
  • H Group: Have, has, had.
  • M Group: Can, could, may, might, should, would, need, must, ought to.
  • D Group: Do, does, did.
  • W Groups: What, which, when, where, how, who, whose, whom.

Let’s look at each group and learn how to frame questions.

Be Group

He / she / it + is → Is + he / she / it?

  • He is a widower → Is he a widower?
  • He is upset →  Is he upset?
  • It is raining →  Is it raining?
  • She is asleep → Is she asleep?

H Group

Have, has, had + I / we / you / they / he / she / it + v3 Verbs.

  • They have arranged a meeting →  Have they arranged a meeting?
  • She has amazed everybody in the ward →  Has she amazed everybody in the ward?
  • We had planned a party →   Had we planned a party?

M Group

  • She can help you → Can she help you?
  • They should walk now →  Should they walk now?

D Group – Do, Does, Did

Look at a few negative sentences with do, does, did:

  • She does not understand English →  Does she not understand English?
  • He does not exercise →  Does he not exercise.

Now, look at a few positive sentences with “does / do / did”:

  • Mr Peter does breathe well →  Does Mr Peter breathe well?
  • He does walk several miles everyday →  Does he walk several miles everyday?

Finally, look at a few sentences without the D words:

  •   Mr Peter breathes well →  Does Mr Peter breathe well?
  • He walks several miles everyday →  Does he walk several miles everyday?
