OET Reading 7 – The Elimination Method

Elimination or exclusion method is one of the most effective of all the methods to find out Reading answers. By this, you eliminate the lest possible answer-choices, one by one.

Memo to: Department physicians and clinical staff

Subject: Aseptic technique

Aseptic technique protects patients during invasive clinical procedures by employing infection control measures that minimize, as far as practicably possible, the presence of pathogenic organisms. Good aseptic technique procedures help prevent and control healthcare associated infections and must be preserved. As you are aware, the aim of every procedure should be to maintain asepsis at all times by protecting the key parts and key sites from contact contamination by microorganisms. This can be achieved through correct hand hygiene, a non-touch technique, glove use and ensuring asepsis and sterility of equipment. While the principles of aseptic technique remain constant for all procedures, the level of practice will change depending upon a standard risk assessment.

Question

The purpose of this memo is to:

  1. Provide staff information on appropriate methods.
  2. Notify staff of a possible change in standard procedure.
  3. Remind staff of the importance of following best practice.

How to find out the correct answer?

The fastest method to find out “purposes” is to find the differences – not similarities. This means, you should check how A, B and C are different.

  • Provide – Staff – information on appropriate methods
  • Notify – Staff – Possible change in standard procedure
  • Remind – Staff – importance of following best practices

You can see that there are 3 different purposes – provide, notify and remind.

  • While “provide” and “notify” are almost similar, “remind” refers to a follow-up action of “re-minding” something that is already “provided” or “notified.”
  • If you look closer, you can see that the text does not mention anything about a “change,” which rules out (eliminates) option B.
  • Look at A and C. In both, the information is similar. One is about appropriate methods” and the other is about “best practice.” Do you find any difference? You can’t!
  • However, looking at the two verbs, “provide” and ” remind,” we can conclude that this is not a “reminding.” So, here goes option C (C eliminated!)
  • If you have understood, select the correct answer below.
