For which / For This

Be confident! Get trained to be natural!

For which and for this have similar meanings but they are used differently.

Remember!

  • “For this” is used to start a sentence.
  • “for which” is used in the middle of a sentence.

Incorrect

  • Ms Anderson was presented with bleeding from the rectum and the rectal examination showed a palpable mass. For which she underwent colonoscopy on 14th of January.
  • Ms Anderson was presented with bleeding from the rectum and the rectal examination showed a palpable mass for this she underwent colonoscopy on 14th of January.

Correct

  • Ms Anderson was presented with bleeding from the rectum and the rectal examination showed a palpable mass for which she underwent colonoscopy on 14th of January.
  • Ms Anderson was presented with bleeding from the rectum and the rectal examination showed a palpable mass. For this she underwent colonoscopy on 14th of January.

Strictly not needed

In similar cases, do not use either “for which” or “for this” because the recipient can understand that “stitching was done” for the conditions mentioned in the first part of the sentence.

On observation, she had bruising in the right shoulder and lower back along with laceration in the left hand. Stitching was done and her X- ray revealed the aforementioned diagnosis.
