Day 14 Adjectives – Advanced

Adjectives – Advanced | Basic

On Day 4 we saw the basic application of adjectives. Today, let’s look at an advanced level of adjectives.

  1. Comparative Degree
  2. Superlative Degree
  3. Confusing Adjectives

Comparative Degree

Look at these sentences and study the use of “more” before active no “more” in higher.

  • She has higher BP for the last five days than in the recent past.
  • Mr Parker is more active at night than during the day.

We cannot add -er with all the adjectives, especially longer ones, like, important, beautiful, painful, etc.

  • “Importanter” (Incorrect)
  • “Beautifuller” (Incorrect)
  • “Painfuller” (Incorrect)

At the same time, we cannot use “more” with smaller adjectives, like, “sharp”, “red”, “high”, etc.

  • more sharp / more sharper (Incorrect) → “Sharper” (Correct)
  • more red / more redder (Incorrect) → “Redder” (Correct)
  • more high / more higher (Incorrect) → “Higher” (Correct)

Lastly, there is a third type of adjectives that take neither -er nor more, like, good, bad, etc.

  • Good: Goodder / gooder (Incorrect) → “Better” (Correct)
  • Bad: Badder / bader (Incorrect) → “Worse” (Correct)
  • Much: “Mucher” (Incorrect) → “More” (Correct)
  • Many: “Manier” (Incorrect → “More” (Correct)

Conclusion

When we have to compare with adjectives, there are 3 kinds of comparisons.

  1. Mr Parker is in a faster recovery phase than before.
  2. Our facility has more experienced doctors than other.
  3. Warfarin is a better choice for your mother at this time than other.

NB: Do not forget to use “than” after type 1, 2 and 3 comparatives.

Superlative Degree

Look at these sentences in superlative degree:

  • Mr Parker is in the fastest recovery phase.
  • Our facility has the most experienced doctors.
  • Warfarin is the best choice for your mother at this time.

And now try to change these sentences into comparative degree:

  • Mr Parker is in the fastest recovery phase → Mr Parker in a faster recovery phase (than before)
  • Our facility has the most experienced doctors → Our facility has more experienced doctors (than others)
  • Warfarin is the best choice for your mother at this time → Warfarin is a better choice for your mother at this point (than other medicines)

Conclusion

When we have to state that something is the best, the highest, the worst or the lowest, there are 3 kinds of superlatives.

  1. Mr Parker is in the fastest recovery phase.
  2. Our facility has the most experienced doctors.
  3. Warfarin is the best choice for your mother at this time.

NB: Do not forget to use “the” before type 1, 2 and 3 superlatives.
