Basic info

English Studies Paper 1 in the IB Diploma Programme English course is a guided textual analysis assessment that requires students to examine unseen texts closely and critically. In this paper, students analyse how writers or creators use language, structure, tone, visual elements, and stylistic techniques to communicate ideas and influence the audience. The task may include a wide range of text types such as advertisements, speeches, articles, blogs, comics, infographics, or literary extracts. Rather than simply summarising the content, students are expected to explore the purpose of the text, the target audience, and the effects created through specific authorial choices. Successful responses demonstrate strong analytical skills, relevant textual evidence, organised argument development, and an awareness of how meaning is constructed within different contexts.
